Austria, Germany seeking to restrict movement within Schengen

With anti-immigration parties running Austria and Italy and German Chancellor Merkel increasingly under pressure from the far right, the free movement of the Schengen Area may become more restricted.

Austria and Germany are looking for ways to work together along their shared border to keep undocumented migrants out.

But they’ll have to find a way around the Schengen Zone agreement which ensures border-free travel within the European Union.

It’s a heated issue in both countries – and nearly split Germany‘s coalition government earlier this month.
